What Would You Take?

In Uncategorized on February 9, 2009 at 9:01 am

It is Monday!  Typically Mondays bring me a question for the week.  This week’s question is this.  If you had to leave tomorrow for an island and only take 5 records, what would they be?  One caveat, they have to be actual records, not mix-CDs. I am going to attempt an answer now, but we’ll see, it may evolve during the week.

1) Third Day’s Offerings II: All I Have to Give I love this record for many reasons.  There are some praise and worship tunes, a few strong medleys, and a strong mix of their catalog.

2) Foo Fighters’ The Colour and the Shape This is one of my favorite all-time albums.  With songs like Everlong, My Hero, and New Way Home, I could listen for hours.

3) James Taylor’s Greatest Hits A classic mix of his best tunes.  Leading off with Something in the Way Moves and ending with a live version of Steamroller, this record allows you to run the gambit of emotional reactions.

4) The Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness I will admit to a technicality here, it is a double-record.  With that said, this is my list, and it falls under one title, so there you go.  This record is phenomenal. The band is firing on all cylinders, the songs are exploratory, and there is a track for every mood.

5) Christophe Coin/Christopher Hogwood-Academy of Ancient Music’s Vivaldi’s Cello Concertos & Sonatas-This version of Vivaldi’s best concertos and sonatas is exquisite.

There you have it.  I would love to hear your top 5 lists?  Please comment with your lists.

Thank you for reading.

  1. Hmm…

    I will say,

1.) Counting Crows – “August and Everything After”. Classic record.

2.) Dave Matthews Band – “Before These Crowded Streets”. Probably the pinnacle of DMB.

3.) Hootie and the Blowfish – “Cracked Rearview”. I defy anyone to listen to this record and not smile. Impossible.

4.) Bruce Springsteen – “Born to Run”. No explanation needed.

5.) Kenny Chesney – “Be as You Are”. If you’re going to an island, either by choice or by edict, this is the album you want with you. Forget Buffett, this is it.

    Great post, LPC.

  2. What is a record?

  3. Nice procrastination tool….

    1) Jars of Clay – “The Eleventh Hour”
    2) U2 – “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb”
    3) John Williams “Summon the Heroes”
    4) Gin Blossoms – “Congratulations I’m Sorry”
    4) Mana – “MTV Unplugged”

  4. Ok, this is tough. To pick only 5 from my long life is a challenge, but here goes…no laughing! #1) Carole King, Tapestry she turned 67 yesterday, looks and sounds fabulous and is taking on a side-career as a political activist. Love her!), #2) James Taylor, could not possibly choose so will go with the Greatest Hits #1, #3) Barry Manilow, Ultimate Manilow, #4) Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Goin’ to a Go-Go, AND #5) Luther Vandross, The Best of Luther Vandross, The Best of Love. There…now I’m exhausted!

  5. 1. The Beatles – The Beatles
    2. Uriah Heep – Classic Heep
    3. The Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique
    4. Twiztid – Independent’s Day
    5. The Ramones – Mania

  6. Gil Evans-Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix…Amazing arrangements of mostly acoustic instruments by one of the most versatile musical minds ever.

Richard Thompson – Rumor and Sigh…this is the one with the song about the motorcycle and the red-headed girl…and even though I have gone grey, in my soul I will always be a red-headed girl. Thompson is an amazing guitarist…fluid like mercury.

Peter Laughner – Take the Guitar Player for a Ride…this one is really obscure, but every woman should have a song written for her at least once in her life, and this album has the one Peter wrote for me. I could listen to it a million times, not because I’m THAT vain, but because it will always remind me of him…

Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company- Cheap Thrills… this one is my no brainer.

Astor Piazzola and Gary Burton- The New Tango… strange tempos, idiosycratic harmonic structure and Gary Burton too? Divine!
